🩺 What Is AKI?
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a sudden, usually reversible loss of kidney function that affects up to 20% of hospitalised patients. It is a complex syndrome with multiple causes and varying severity.
While short-term mortality remains high — increasing by up to 30% in patients with Stage 3 AKI and even more in intensive care settings — many patients survive the initial episode. However, survivors face long-term risks including:
The development or progression of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
Increased dialysis dependency
Higher risk of cardiovascular events
Greater likelihood of hospital readmissions
This diverse group of patients, who experience AKI in various clinical contexts and with differing causes and outcomes, represents a significant population in need of coordinated, high-quality care.

AKI nurse-led services are a relatively new but rapidly growing area within the UK. Their purpose is to:
